Windows XP

Defragging your computer means that you are taking files that might be scattered across your hard drive. When you save a file, the computer saves the file in the next available spot on the hard drive. You can think of these spots as parking spaces in a parking lot. After a while, parking spots are not available in a line any more and you have to start parking cars in different spots.

That in the computer realm would mean that a file is fragmented. What defragging means to do is, take the files and line them up again so that the computer does not have to work as hard to find the files and they are in a nice line in the hard drive.

To defrag your computer you must be, logged on to your computer as the administrator. To open the defragging program supplied with Windows XP you will need to left click start, open all programs, hover over accessories, and then again over systems tools. Then left click on disk defragmenter. Near the bottom, you will see two options that have not been, grayed out.

Analyze and Defragment. Analyze will check to see if the disk is fragmented badly and tell you if it thinks you need to defrag and Defragment starts the defragmenting process. If you do need to defrag just click the Defragment button.

Before you begin the process be sure that you have set a side an hour or so, and that the computer will not be in use during the defragmenting process. In most cases, it is best to let the computer Defragment overnight. Once you have set aside the time for the computer to be defragmented then you will want to left click the Defragment button and let it begin.

Do not install anything during this time or mess with any files as it might hurt them or your computer. If you happen to move, a file while it is defragmenting that file it will most likely make the file unattainable and you might lose the file forever.

Using these tips, you can defrag your computer yourself and probably save yourself fifty bucks instead of having a computer tech or shop doing it for you. If your computer were slowing down this would be one the first things to try. This can help your computer speed up opening of programs and applications that seem to be taking longer than they should. This is one way; you can help your computer, to run properly.

Computer Protection

Do not go online without it!

The Internet is a wonderful tool which allows you do things such as shopping, browsing and search for just about anything you may be looking for. However, in the same way that we use it as a tool to get many things done, so do identity theft thieves, hackers, and spammers. The difference is that these miscreants whose sole purpose is to steal and highjack your computer from you will stop at nothing until they do. The reason for this is simple; they in turn get all your personal credit card and banking information, passwords and even the sites you visit. Many hackers will even use your PC as a gateway to other crimes by hiding themselves within your system and sending out spam, committing credit card fraud and much more.

If you regularly use the Internet to shop or simply just to browse you need to be sure your computer is protected against the many dangers out there in cyberspace. There are hundreds of sites who look legitimate but are actually full of spy-ware and viruses and end up leading you to programs that contain malware. If you use software such as P2P like Ares or Limewire then you are in for a big surprise. About 70% of these programs you download actually contain Trojan horse viruses. A Trojan horse virus is one that comes within a legitimate program and will install itself along with the program. Most of the time you will not even be aware of it until it is too late. If you do not have a Firewall running on your PC or Laptop, then chances are each time you browse the Internet hackers, thieves and spammers are sending 'pings' to your computer in order to know if you have security and then infiltrate it. It is almost impossible to know when this is happening without a program to detect, warn and stop it from happening. There are other countless of programs that you may download which seem innocent enough. Yet most of these programs contain Spy-ware. The sole purpose for this software is to log and record all the information on all of the pages you visit all day. This means that whatever site you visit, they will know and sell that information to others. This is the reason so many of us get so much spam each day. Most of that spam comes via the spy-ware found on many computers. It is sort of a backdoor way for them to know what to advertise to you but obtaining that information while invading your privacy. If you have a PC or laptop you need to protect it as it is the gateway to all your personal information.

Luckily for us there are many programs out there which are good while there are others which are great! A great Internet security program will not only protect your computer from anti-virus and anti-spyware but will also offer you Firewall, email, identity protection and IM security along with parental controls as well. One program I have been using for quite a while offers all of these features plus many more. I highly recommend it for its simple to use interface as well the extra sense of security it provides. If you are surfing, shopping or simply browsing online without your computer protected, then I implore you to look into safeguarding the key to the door of your PC. Not having a Great Internet security program installed on your computer is like sleeping with your front door wide open. We all know no one would ever do that right? Protect yourself by protecting your computer today!

Picking a Computer

When you're looking to buy a computer, there are several things you need to consider. Most people are unaware of the things they need on their computer because all they really want are the basic essentials. While this can be okay, you still might want to know what you're getting so you can get a bang for your buck.

Gaming Rig

Gaming computers tend to be on the pricier side. The main reason for this is because games these days tend to be resource heavy in terms of hardware quality. The point of a gaming rig is to be able to play and computer software games out there without any problems. Usually, these systems would require fast multi-processors (at least 1 GHz for each processor), lots of RAM (4 Gb of ram would do), and an extremely good graphics card. These systems can easily reach one thousand dollars or more depending on the specifications you want. I would say that these systems would have to be the most expensive types of computers you can get.

Standard use

If you're planning to just do some light gaming, surf the internet, or watch DVDs on your computer, then you wouldn't need to find a computer that's resource heavy. Depending on what you're doing, a processor with 2 Ghz and 2 Gb of RAM would suffice. Although, technology now days tend to change rapidly. This type of specification would be considered "below average". Another thing you need to consider is your budget versus the features of the computer. If you're just using it for standard use, it's pointless to get a very high quality computer if you're just going to use its minimal potential.

Portable eBooks

If you're strictly looking into finding a computer which you can type your office work or homework, then you might want to try and find the mini eBooks. There are laptops out there with "mini processors" which has the minimal hardware quality. It is among the cheapest of all computer systems and it gets the job done. Obviously, you wouldn't be able to play high quality games or do a lot of things on it, but if you're strictly into work related things, these are the type of systems you should be looking for. These tend to sell for around three hundred dollars depending on the added features you want on it.

AV.exe Virus - Get an AV.exe

Is AV.exe causing you problems? Join the club! The list of victims out there who badly need to remove AV.exe from their computers just keeps getting longer and longer. You really should delete AV.exe as soon as possible, the longer you wait, the more damage it can and will do.

If the infection is in its early stages, you might be able to uninstall AV.exe, but it you've been infected for some time then to eliminate it completely you will need stronger measures. The longer you use an infected PC, the bigger the chance that the virus will embed itself in the system registry and create all kinds of bogus pop up warnings. Once it is in the registry, it becomes very hard to do away with the malware. Worse, from the registry it can steal sensitive information and send it out.

Since AV.exe removal is so hard, you should know how the virus gets on your PC:

• It infects your PC through Adobe software. Adobe is a frequent victim of virus attacks due to security vulnerabilities, always use real time virus protection on when you are online.
• You can catch it on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, you should really only add people you know as your friends.
• Downloading some shareware or freeware programs. A lot of malicious software is actually distributed in the guise of useful freeware; don't download anything unless an experienced and trusted user has recommended it.

Don't be deceived by the pop ups that tell you things like "Your data is unprotected!". This is just a trick to lure you into shelling out good money for even more harmful software.

You could try to get rid of AV.exe manually, some more daring users attempt this, it is done by deleting all AV.exe related processes (all malicious EXE files), Erasing any associated DLL files (Dynamic Link Library), Removing any.lnk files associated with the virus, and entering the registry via the regedit command and finding and removing dangerous files in following directories HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

The procedure is not easy, and if done incorrectly, you could end up just wasting time, as the virus will simply spread again on reboot, or worse, you could do more harm than good, and your PC may not reboot at all.

The fast and easy way to remove AV.exe is with the use of a virus removal tool. A removal tool can scan your whole system and take out any infection in minutes; it will also protect you against future attacks.

Tired of viruses infecting your computer? Want to surf the web with the peace of mind that your computer is safe and secure? Get your free scan from the top virus protection and remove AV.exe.

Jim Marshall is an expert computer technician with fifteen years of experience in the industry. Since his own computer was destroyed by malicious software, he has been studying antispyware, adware, and malware systems for years. His website details the comprehensive results of this research, ranking the best antispyware and antivirus programs available.

Major Ebook Readers?

If you are planning of ordering an eBook Reader, in that case it is practical to compare the 3 big 3 on the marketplace, the Barnes and Noble Nook, Amazon Kindle 2 and the new Sony Reader Touch Edition. Here is an in depth evaluation of all three that will help you choose To start with, why don't we explore the commonalities in all 3 ebook readers.

Screen-Display The Nook, Kindle 2, and all book lovers benefit from the leading edge display technology"E Ink". This is not your run-of-the-mill screen pixels. This screen displays the text and images (grayscale) up against the bottom of the display glass. This you can look at,crystal clear text even at extreme angles and lighting situations.

Text can be in numerous sizes for all 3 models and adjusted to suitable levels.

Audio Support- All 3 devices, permit you to download and listen to MP3 songs while reading.

Value pricing is comparable between the 3 Devices.

Variation involving the 3 devices.

Wi-Fi and 3G The Nook and Kindle 2 can be accessed on the Internet to download and read newer titles and magazines. The Sony Touch Reader won't work, instead, has to hook, download the reader to the PC using USB and the books. It should be pointed out, the Sony Reader Daily Edition Wireless and 3G, when it is released. This particular product is a lot more pricey than the Kindle Nook and 2 by a good bit, so that's why this product in this comparison was not included!

Color menu screen navigation The color strip under the display screen on the Nook differentiates it from other ebook readers. You will be able to see color illustrations or photos of book covers. This has been slowing, according to many reports, something that definitely slower than, say, the iPhone in response.

Three Priorities For IT in 2010 - Part 1

As we launch into 2010, the IT industry is faced with three major challenges. What makes these so significant is they are not on the radar of most companies. In this report I will address the first challenge that we as an industry have ignored. Although I can not provide answers, my hope for this article is to expose the issues and launch a dialogue within the IT community as we search for answers.

This is not your Father's IT

The first challenge I call "Your Father's IT", or better yet, "Your Grandfather's IT" We live in an age where technology is advancing at phenomenal rates. However, companies are slow to adopt these new technologies. The biggest reason is quite simply, legacy IT staff does not know what to do with them! They are stuck in old IT paradigms and can not see how their IT world could be improved with new technologies.

Old IT paradigms are the biggest obstacle to capitalizing on new technologies

In order to adopt new technologies IT has to think outside the legacy IT box. They have to be willing to redefine what IT can become. Let us look at IT Consumerization as an example; Consumerization is the ability for business professionals to use their personal smart phones and other smart devices at their workplace. Today, the "Your Fathers IT" reaction is "No Way! This technology is a security risk and cannot be allowed into the workplace". However, organizations with "New IT" paradigms will look at the new capabilities and determine how (or if) the devices can make their company more competitive. If so, they will find ways to secure the technology and make it work for them. I am not suggesting all new technologies be implemented. I am suggesting the IT industry gravitate to a new paradigm; a mindset that is determined to evaluate how new technologies will, or will not, benefit their business.

Today, "Your Father's IT" waits until the technology is released and the bugs worked out. Eventually they evaluate the technology then fund and finally implement. I have seen this process take up to twenty four months. That is two years without the business benefits offered by the technology. This mindset can cost a company millions of dollars over that twenty four month period. Imagine your competitors reaping the cost benefits and efficiencies of new technologies while your legacy IT is stuck in a wait and see mode of operation.

Companies who have adopted the "New IT" paradigm will be delivering value propositions to the business before new technologies are formally released. Successful companies will not wait to deploy new technologies until current technology reaches end of life. They will do it when there is a compelling business case to do so.

So how does a company break out of the legacy IT paradigm? How do they change their current mode of operation? Can a company teach their Legacy IT new tricks? Can a companies culture adapt to a "New IT" paradigm without external pressures? What can push a company out of its "Old IT" patterns that are so comfortable today? I am convinced that if companies do not adapt to "New IT" paradigms they will not survive the next decade. However, changing paradigms and corporate cultures can be an impossible task. One does not merely decide one day that their IT will think and behave differently from now on.

This challenge is easily ignored and has been for years. However, ignoring this challenge only puts your business at continued risk of becoming obsolete and uncompetitive. In 2010 we must take steps to limit our exposure to this and the two challenges I will discuss in the next reports. If your company is going to survive the next decade you have to come up with answers to these challenges. As I mentioned earlier, my intent is to open the door to further dialogue. Let us consider the door wide open.

Lian Li Cases

Talking about high end systems, Lian Li is considered by most people to be the high end brand. Most people who are familiar with cases and are looking for a new PC building project will look at Lian Li first as the name is synonymous with design, quality, elegance and exclusive features. Lian Li wanted to diversity into the middle range consumer market but they did not want to affect the quality of their products so they created the LanCool brand series. The main difference is that the cases are made of SECC steel instead of aluminum.

The Dragon Lord PC K-62 case is a mid tower chassis aimed at gamers and enthusiasts and it features tool less design with plenty of cooling options yet its operation is silent. It is a good looking gaming case that should appeal to most users and this is not something that you can say about most cases. When you look at the minor details of this case, it becomes obvious that it is a Lian Li case. The front grill extends the entire length of the case and the top of the case has been dressed up by using plastic and the design ties in well with the rest of the case. At the front there is an I/O panel that is very easy to access. There are two USB ports and two audio jacks. There are many other features that make this mid end case more like a high end case. Priced at approximately one hundred dollars this case is a steal. It is also very spacious and will support high end graphics cards.

When shopping for a Lian Li case, be sure to look for dealers that offer at least a one year warranty and at least a 30 day money back guarantee. Although you probably will not need to use either, it is always better to be cautious when purchasing any product. Also, check for restocking fees and decide if you are willing to pay that if the case is not exactly the one you are looking for. A Lian Li case is known for its great features, its easy installation and its good looking design. You really cannot go wrong with one of these quality cases.

Computer Rental Agency

It is important to note that technology is constantly evolving and changing, many latest and new features are constantly being added to the existing products. Many products are upgraded to meet the requirements in terms of efficiency and time constraints. For this reason it is essential to provide quality computers to train new employees in any business. However it will not be economically feasible to purchase new computers every time, hence the best option is to order computers from computer rental services.

Acquiring computer rentals or laptop rentals does not have to be a difficult task. If you own a business you can order computer rentals, laptop rentals, and PC desktops from any rental agency. There are many who still think that purchasing computer rentals can be feasible, and it is. Purchasing laptop rentals or pc desktop every time can be very time consuming. You would be required to update the hardware whenever new software is launched. Much latest software require upgraded hardware for effective execution of programs.

There are many benefits of ordering PC desktops through rental agencies, some of the benefits are associated with acquiring latest technology with your rental. You can request same model monitor, and keyboards for every user. If you order pc desktops you will save capital while you use the installation services of a rental computer agency, most of the time the installation services are free of any charge. You'll also save lot of time because installation procedures are very time consuming and tedious, your personnel resources will not be assigned the task of installation.

Contracting computer rental agency will help you save lot of time and money over equipment problems that occur frequently. The agency has its own resources that will be able to resolve any equipment problem. This will help your trainers to completely focus on training program without any disruptions.

If you are planning to order computer equipments from any electronic equipment agency it is important that you check whether the company has its own expertise who could handle equipment problems without causing any delay. Ensure that all the necessary equipments are delivered as per schedule; this will help you lay a set up time before you can execute your training programs. It is important to note that quality rental computer agency will have all the essential components and technician to fix any problems at any point of time.

Computer Disposals

Has your company recently undergone a mass deployment of new computer hardware? Have you considered what is going to become of your old computer hardware? Some companies will simply throw out the old equipment and never give it a second thought but most companies today know that they can't just drop their old computers off at a landfill. Many of today's businesses recycle their computer hardware by taking advantage of service companies that offer free computer disposals so that the old equipment can be sold or donated to benefit charities and educational facilities. Whilst your technology needs may require more robust equipment, the old equipment may suit someone else perfectly.

Above and beyond the fact that your old equipment might still be useful, there are other issues at hand when considering the disposal of your old equipment: legalities, cost and time. Services that offer free computer disposals take the cost of disposal and the worry of disposing of sensitive and confidential data off your mind and off your plate.

Some disposal services may require you to drop off your equipment and / or to pay for disposal and for data destruction. Be aware that there are services that also offer data destruction and recycling services of computer hardware that will pick up the equipment at your location and provide you with a disposal certificate for your records. This certificate assures you that your data has been destroyed so you're able to rest assured that sensitive and confidential company data is not out there able to get into the wrong hands.

You may not be too concerned about monitors as much as computer memory and hard drives in terms of safety but there are ecological concerns to consider as well. Companies that act as responsible corporate citizens and do their part to save local landfills from unnecessary waste improve their corporate image as well. When your prospective customers investigate doing business with you, one area they may look at is your attention to green initiatives.

Many charities and third world countries benefit from corporate generosity. By donating your old computers to a company that offers safe and free computer disposals, it's a win-win situation for you, the charity and individual benefiting from your generosity as well as for the landfill that won't have to contend with more waste. Your old office computers may not get to live on indefinitely but the more use that can be extracted from them, the better. Don't you think?

How Do I Increase Performance

Many people have slow computers and continuously wonder "why is my PC so slow". If you are one of the many people who have to wait several minutes for their computer to boot up, load programs or even perform simple tasks then you certainly know of the frustrations of a slow computer.

Most people assume that their computer troubles are because their computer does not have enough memory. This is a major contributor to a slow computer but it isn't the first alternative you should turn to fix your computer. First you should try using a registry cleaner to scan and fix the problems in the computer's registry.

The registry is what Windows uses to perform all the tasks on your computer from booting up to running programs and hardware. The registry is one of the most common causes of a slow computer, making it even more surprising, many people don't even know what the registry is, let alone how to fix it.

Because the registry contains data related to computer tasks, when there are problems with the files in it being corrupted and disorganized, your computer will not be operating at its peak performance. Your computer may even be experiencing crashes but you can improve your computer performance by fixing the problems with the registry and quit wondering "why is my PC so slow".

Thankfully it is not that hard to repair the registry. Using registry cleaning software to fix your computer will solve these problems. Errors in the registry happen all the time and there is little to do to prevent them, but scanning and fixing the problems regularly using a registry cleaner can prevent you from having a slow computer.

Slow Network

Have you ever annoyed that the network speed is quite slower than before? For example, it takes more and more time to open a website while there is nothing wrong with the Explorer. Well, in this article, you can learn some useful tips to fix slow network problems.

In the very first place, it is the problem of network itself. The bandwidth of aim website server is not large or overloaded. This is the easiest problem and what you need to do is to change to other websites or change other to visit it.

Secondly, you may have used too many firewalls. If you use too many firewalls, it can slow down network for sure. The simplest way is to uninstall those unnecessary ones and just need to keep a powerful one, it is sufficient to serve very well for computer. You can remove such excessive firewall so as to improve net work speed.

And then, the system resource is too low. It is probably that there are excessive applications running in the background and computer is unable to spare enough resource for network. In order to solve this problem, you should load programs and delete useless applications and files properly so as to free up more space. By doing this, you can speed up network.

Next, computer worms may reduce network speed. Worm virus that is spread through E-mail has affected network more and more seriously. Such virus can force the affected users to send E-mails restlessly. Numerous junk E-mails are sent from your computer every second while millions of them are returned to your server in batches.

In this way, such rubbish is piling up in the server and slows down speed. As a result, you should upgrade anti-virus software and your computer and install patching program in time as well. And do not forget to uninstall those unnecessary services and to close down needless ports so as to improve safety and stability of system.

Network With VLANs

In an organisation or a particular network, there are reasons why certain hosts access each other while others do not. As an example, members of the accounting department may be the only users who need to access the accounting server. This is where segmenting your network with VLANs comes in. A Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN) is a logical broadcast domain that can span multiple physical LAN segments. With VLANs, you can group together stations by logical function, by project teams, or by applications, despite the physical location of the users.

Lets take for an example of an organisation in the same building with different departments, the marketing, accounts and IT departments.

In a normal switched network, every host connected to the network is able to access the other user's data on the network.

With a proper VLAN configured, it was decided that only the accounting department can access the accounting sever and IT department can access the marketing department. The departments are now logically separated into two virtual LANs.

By Using this logical grouping or VLANs, the accounting department is grouped on the same VLANs with the server, even though IT, accounting and marketing are physically located within the same building.

Each VLAN functions as a separate LAN. A VLAN can be implemented on one or more switches; users on different VLANs behave as if they were on the same network segment. A device can be assigned to a VLAN based on its location, MAC address, IP address, or the applications that the device most frequently uses.

A VLAN has two major functions:

i. Contains broadcasts.
ii. Groups devices. Devices located on one VLAN are not visible to devices located on another VLAN.

Devices or users connected to a VLAN can only communicate with other users in the same VLAN despite whether those devices or users are on the same switch or different switches. VLANs can be used to isolate certain traffic for security reasons; VLANs conserve bandwidth, and concentrate traffic on an organisations network. All of these features combine to improve network performance.

Note:
For devices on the same VLANS to communicate requires unique logical address and a Layer 3 device. And switches have to be configured with trunk links between them.

Nasty Problems

Lsass.exe errors can be a nasty problem that likes to shutdown Windows and cause problems restarting and loading back into windows.

Lsass errors are most commonly caused by a virus. The "Sasser" virus was recognized a bit too late by Microsoft, so the security update came a bit after the fact.

The first thing you'll want to do, if your Windows is still operational, is to install the "Sasser" update to your Windows.

While this probably won't fix your PC outright, it will help in the prevention of further infection. You'll probably want to go through the following troubleshooting, depending on the severity of your infection.

Prevent Windows Shutdown

If you still have access to your Windows (if it is at least booting into Windows), you'll want to prevent the shutdowns post-haste.

This is a pretty simple process. Just go to Start > Run (or press the Cmnd or "Windows" button). In the Run box, type in the command "shutdown -a".

While this won't ride you of your error/virus problem, it will prevent the debilitating shutdown process that the error is infamous for. This will allow you to continue troubleshooting your PC until you get rid of the problem.

Scan Your System for Sasser Virus

The first process in your troubleshooting will be looking for a virus. Since most lsass problems consist of this infection, it will be the first place to look.

Scanning for viruses is pretty simple. Simply download the program of your choosing and follow the instructions it gives you.

Not all antivirus programs are created equal. I suggest trying a few different free ones until you find one that is easy to use and does the job properly for you.

I would also strongly consider a registry cleaner. Because the registry is a particularly vulnerable area on your computer, it is important to keep it in order and free of program fragments and infection.

NOTE: Always keep a firewall active!

For Advanced Infections, Reinstall Windows

If you are not able to access Windows at all (it keeps rebooting before Windows loads, even when you try to enter in Safe Mode), then you'll likely need to install Windows over the top of the old.

The process is pretty simple. You'll just want to install Windows from your Windows disk to the same directory as your original copy. It should overwrite any errors without resetting any of your user settings, programs, etc.

For more information on how to keep your system free of lsass.exe errors, check out the information here.

Computer Getting Slow?

Is your once mighty stead of a computer getting slow? I know it is frustrating and mystifying. I mean, all the parts of the computer are the same as when you bought it, so why is the computer getting slow? And how do you fix a slow computer?

  • Why is the computer getting slow?
  • There can be a number of reasons your computer's getting slow, but I would check the following first.
  • Is there enough memory?
  • Is your computer free from spyware?
  • Is your computer's registry clean and error free?
How to fix a slow computer.

  • Memory: If it is the memory is the cause of your computer getting slow, you will need to buy more memory and add it to your system. You should check with your computer's manufacturer as to what type of memory you should install. If your PC is less than a year old you should have enough memory and I would not worry about more unless you are a heavy gamer.
  • Spyware: Spyware could be the cause of your computer getting slow. Spyware is software that has been installed on your computer from websites you have visited. This software monitors where you go on the web and sends that data to advertisers so they can target the advertising you receive on your PC. The problem is that this can slow down your PC. If you don't have spyware protection you should get some now and use it to clean your PC form spyware.
  • The Computer Registry: This is often the most overlooked cause of your computer getting slow. The registry is a data base on your computer that keeps track of all of the software setting and hardware settings. As you install and remove software from your PC it is all tracked in the registry. As you or your software changes the settings in the registry often it leaves behind obsolete settings and becomes corrupted. Since the registry regulates the operation of your PC you it can be the cause of your computer getting slow.
Registry Fix

Be careful with your registry, one mistake and your computer my stop all together-for good. Either go to a repair shop or purchase excellent registry software. To be honest good registry software is what they will run on your PC at the repair shop so if you buy it yourself and run it you will save yourself big bucks.
